I'll gladly let you kill me then.
-That promise, make sure you keep it.
So I think Daon's backstory is significant for us to understand a bit more about Han Daon as a character. He's got this huge scar from his childhood incident that he never really healed from. Also, he's no saint. We've seen him wavering in what he should/should not do more than once so far.
Tumblr media
He knows giving police protection to criminals is a waste but still does it because it's the lawful thing to do. He wavers for a couple of seconds there when Kang Bitna offers to kill his parents' killer for him because the law cannot. From what I see, he's always walked on a thin line between what is right or wrong according to society's definition. He definitely has a violent streak in him; he's just never had to fully give in to that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You bet he'd have ended up on the dark side after his parents' death if not for his noona who never gave up on him, turned him away, with her love and kindness, from a path that could have led him to darkness and uncertainty. Now that Detective Soyeong is gone, the person who showed him light is gone too. His only family after he'd lost his own, gone. And he's back to being that kid again who had so much unresolved hurt, trauma and angst against the law that didn't believe in him (a wound he still carries). Law that wasn't enough to give him his well-deserved justice. Back then, he had Soyeong who was a human and law abiding individual. Now, he has Kang Bitna aka Justitia, a demon who serves justice in her own way because she knows the human law is faulty. If Han Daon was guided to life and light back then because of Soyeong, would he then give in to death and darkness now, because he is already spiraling as it is and there's no one to bring him back to light?
Tumblr media
Why do I feel Kang Bitna actually wouldn't want that? It was different back when she'd stabbed him, but the switch is flipped now, and I think she'd care very much about Han Daon's future and fate. The way she goes 'HAN DAON!' and 'Then you'll end up in hell too' and stares at him like she doesn't recognize this version of Daon--I've replayed that scene far too many times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because Bitna may say Daon's morality and tenacity to get to the truth is annoying, but I think she doesn't even know that she appreciates it, which is also why she gets so worked up every time she feels like Daon's faked his emotions or betrayed her with his words: she expects him to be on the side of truth and righteousness.
Tumblr media
Even though we see her supporting Daon in the precap for eps 9 and 10, she might go out of her way and even risk her own existence to keep Daon away from darkness later, because now if something happens to him, she'd be the first one to cry.
Tumblr media
A part of me also thinks Daon cannot go ALL the way with his revenge because he'd made a promise to Detective Soyeong to always be a detective first and do his job. It's his vengeance talking right now but once that wears off and reason kicks in, I don't think he'd want to kill somebody unlawfully, disrespecting the promise he made to his noona.
Or we could totally have a switch up with Bitna becoming the superego and Daon, the id. It'll be interesting to see if Bitna starts shifting gradually toward the 'unevil' side while helping Daon, having his back and protecting him. She might have to take Daon's life after all (deal with the Demon and all), but at a time when it'll hurt her THE MOST doing so. Maybe the power of Kylum can come to their rescue then, reviving Daon? It also makes me think if the 'Other Thing' you need for Kylum to work its divine magic is unconditional love/sacrificial love, where Bitna would have to willingly give up her life to revive Daon?
*cough* ^I take no responsibility for what I just said above thank you very much T-T

The judge from hell keeps getting better and better, Han Da On is hilarious for trying to arrest a demon who, as far as he knows, IS really important in hell and could easily just leave Kang Bitna’s body and get a different one lol. How do you arrest someone like that?

drama name : The Judge from Hell (2024)
season : 1
my rating : 9/10
--------------------
ah yes who doesn't like to see women committing violence and taking revenge on those who deserve it ? I'm a huge fan of it tbh. This is a story about Justitia, who is punished to go on earth and k word 20 unforgivable criminals and send them back to hell but she possesses the body of Kang Bitna who is also a judge who presides over the criminal cases. The story follows the journey of Kang Bitna who never gives a deserving verdict to the criminals and instead makes them feel exactly how they made their victims feel and it's just so satisfying ???? This also follows the story of officer Han Daon who's been suspicious of her since day 1 and tries his best to catch her red handed (spoiler they instead fall in love lmao). There's also the concept of how hell works with its demons and their ranks. So yeah if you like court dramas mixed with mysterious criminal activities and fantasy elements (literally my three fav genres combined ohmygawd this kdrama was made for me) I would definitely recommend this drama to you. For me personally, I LOVED the cast and the character development and their acting and the storyline and all the plot twists and the fluff and comedy in between (I still wish there was a plot twist at the end but it's okay not everything can be perfect) but yeah this is the type of drama that you can't help but binge watch and that's exactly what I did and I'm in love.

What do you guys think of the theory that next episode Justitia will go back to hell and the original Kang Bitna will come back to her body? Like I know thats unlikely but imagine it 🥺
Like poor daon cause he’s actually in love with Justitia and not Bitna so IF Bitna were to return he’d just be.. yknow sad lonely boy missing his real demon love 💔💔💔💔
But also Poor real Bitna cause she’s finally back and alive in her body but the korean public hate her and all she can do is just be there like🧍‍♀️

Doctor: You have been affected by a great external stress stimuli. You should try to avoid it.
Kang Bitna (flasbacks on Da-On): What if I can't?
Doctor: Then you must eliminate it.
Kang Bitna (shocked) : And if I can't do that?
Doctor: Then you might need to find a way to like it 😄
***Me: That's what causing her great stress though lol a demon liking a human ain't good for their non-existent heart (which, she has apparently grown after meeting Da-On lol)

Dude
I watched Judge from hell. It's a new korean drama series, it's so fucking good it's not even funny. Basically it's about Justitia, a demon who gets sent to earth for condemning an innocent human to Gehenna/hell. (basically she can only condemn murderers)
She has to be in the body of a human judge on earth, Kang Bitna. I won't spoil too much, but she has to find ten unpenitent/not sorry murderers on earth.
(also to note the show does contain a lot of abusive or tough subjects, so y'know err on the side of caution when watching if it triggers you <3)

I don't want to spend ....
an entire twenty minutes trying to come up with a solid review for 'The Judge From Hell' because I'm not feeling it, plus I am more excited to start working on some art that I want to do.
[lots of SPoILeRs up ahead.]
Anyway... All I have to say is... That the cultural gap between South Korea and western religions was very evident in the way the whole lore of 'The Judge From Hell' was handled. Like.... What religion were we alluding to here? Catholic? Baptist? Methodist? Either way... I eventually didn't care, I was like. Oh well, it's the 'Good Religion' they're following. You know, the righteous one.
There was no alluding to any kind of entities from South Korean culture like in 'Hotel Del Luna'. So... It made me think they were trying their luck with Western type religious imagery. As far as originality goes, I will give it that. It's very original lore. What with something called a Kylum and Satan and Bael fighting against each other for it.
... Like you're telling me that these demons serve Lucifer and the demon lort[lord] was nowhere in sight? Did we ran out of budget or something to have THE MAIN boss show up and be like, 'Ok bitches, what you all doing fucking around in the human world. When did I allow that?' or something.
Also.... Kang BitNa... What happened to her? I never got it. Like, where did she end up? After Gremory chased after her, and she ran off. Where did she go? did she stay in 'Fake Hell'? Did she escape 'Hell' overall? What happened? Did I miss it within the subtitles and the dialogue?
Why didn't we get more insight on her as a character? All I know was that she was going to get married to that psycho dude and she saw something she shouldn't have and got killed because of it. How was she as a judge, though? How did she end up with such a psycho dude being a very 'good' judge? I mean, as far as the tiny bit of information we get in the series, BitNa was a great judge, but then she was murdered and died. That's how Justitia took over. hmmm...
I get it, the whole story was Justitia and her mission. It was very fun and SATISFACTORY to watch though, and what I do have to praise the series on were the performances. These actors went in on this and crushed their performances, making me smile every other time. I loved Park Shin Hye's performance. But I'm just biased cause she's a fave. Kim JaeYoung was really good too, and just everyone else. They made this worth watching.
Yes, if you watch this, do not expect any kind of realism, anything to make sense, or anything to be 'logical'. Please leave your stupid 'eVeRyThINg NeEdS tO MaKe SeNSe' logic behind, this is fiction, most importantly FANTASY. It does not have to make sense. Hell you can fucking say the entire HUMAN world has a red sky in that reality and that would fly because FICTION.
none of this shit is trying to be 'realistic'. That said... I still gave this 9 outta 10 because I felt bad that Kang BitNa's story never got resolved and Lucifer was nowhere in sight. Instead we had Gabriel... Gabriel seems to be always messing with them demons. I've seen it in works like 'Constantine' and other ish based on the demons and the angels type lore. To be fair, 'Constantine' had a super bad ass Lucifer showing up at some point.
Anyway... yeah... It's over... I was like. Soooooo can we have a season two, to see what happened to BitNa? And if Justitia is going to do that whole becoming a human thing? ... no? yes? maybe? ... *shrugs*
It was a fun ride either way. I liked it, but the ending left me wanting more, to be honest.
Final Verdict: 'What happened to Kang BitNa!?'

hey! what do you make of the judge from hell so far? there are a lot of violent scenes, are you ok with them? i feel like kang bitna is too entertaining to pass up on enjoying this show
I found the reversal scenes, where the pain the murderer has inflicted upon others happens back to them, to be pretty hard to watch, but fortunately they are very predictable if you need to skip. The spousal abuse in Ep 1/2 and child abuse in Ep 3/4 were a bit intense but I was okay. So far it's not super gory, it's more about how helpless the victims feel.
It's probably right at the limit of my tolerance for violence/gore. Death's Game went over for reference, I had to skip parts.
But Kang Bit-na is so funny as an immoral demon, so I am enjoying it.

You didn't do it, right?
Tumblr media
Been enjoying The Judge from Hell a bit more than I care to admit, and ig it's mainly because how well paced, well-balanced the setup and story have been so far, as well as the way the two (or three depending on how you see it) characters are written.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I couldn't help thinking about Freud's id, ego and superego in forming human psyche, and wondering if Justitia and Daon are supposed to be id and superego respectively. If id represents the unbarred, uncontrolled desires, needs and instincts, and superego represents the self which is driven by morality, civility, conformity, then it makes sense why as an audience, I find Justitia's actions somewhat problematic and yet feel this satisfaction every time she does her whole Ultimate Trial thing with the Gehenna knife. It's disturbing, and can be triggering even, yes, but she does what we cannot do, what we may have wanted to do on many occasions in life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We want evil to be punished and held accountable, but our morality has taught us that there is a process to follow for that, that we have to trust the system (even if the system is flawed). Because we live in a society, because we are generally law abiding individuals, because we care about appearances and perceptions, because we care about consequences, because 'we should not think that way' or because 'that is not a sane, civilized, acceptable thing to do', because otherwise there would be no order and only anarchy. Because we are Daon, who is bound by the moral compass their superego has constructed.
Tumblr media
It makes me wonder, then: who is supposed to be the ego, the middle ground, the mediator between the id and the superego as the story progresses? Will it be Justitia, who'd eventually learn how to pass verdicts that are not in violation with the morality of human world? Will it be Daon, who'd be compelled to go beyond the man-made laws because sometimes, to punish evil/bad humans, one has to call in their inner demon? Or as they join hands (presumably), they're both supposed take on that role as needed? (and what do we make of human Kang Bitna then?) Is Bitna ending up in hell part of some grand scheme, where Justitia gets to redeem herself while helping Daon rid himself of his guilt (because imo Daon would never get to the killer without Justitia)?

This WOULD be such an amazing twist.
I also got this same idea (but I thought that it's just me and twisted brain haha).
But no really. I got the idea after Daon entered the Demons meeting. And after that team-head demon told the tale of Satan and Kylum... See Daon IS VERY SMART, but he acted completely clueless like he couldn't understand anything the demon had said.
And when Justitia told him to leave, he didn't. Which is not an abnormal take for a "pretty unhinged ML", but if you think about it he had nothing actually to gain by being there. He was investigating her as a suspect for the investigation, but the demons who are meeting Bitna for the first time wouldn't be helpful. And even if he wanted to know more about "the demon Bitna", she had already lied that he was also a demon and her driver. Infact if he hadn't seen the demon worker crying, the "be careful of Kang Bitna" part would also never have happened. Seemed also wierd that it all happened "26 yrs ago". Like around the time Daon's family was killed?
Although honestly there are so many dramas and movies where the psycho serial killer leaves one person behind to leave on the the trauma. And that also wouldn't explain so many parts where we see a very human Daon. Like when he starts crying before Bitna because she would have listened to him as a child. But like you said after so many yrs he's probably embraced the humanity within himself.
Which is why he completely despises what Bitna is doing. He became a detective to catch and punish criminals the lawful way, he didn't go on a killing spree. Like he said to her during the investigation, that even though the perpetrator is dead, the truth never came to light.
Even behind all the good and kindness, we keep seeing bits and pieces of unhinged Daon. And then his last shred of righteousness falls, and we see the real unhinged person behind.
Also how is this show going to end otherwise. Bitna can't stay on earth. Even if she wants to she has only one year to catch 20 criminals. After that she HAS to go back to hell. And Bitna isn't going to let Daon become a killer and go to hell. The logical ending would be her completing her mission and going back after a teary goodbye, but that doesn't match with show's vibe.
And with only four episodes left they aren't going to bring someone new as Satan. It's going to be a reveal, hopefully a big one.
And given how uninterested Bitna sat at the meeting about Satan, and that she only went because if a demon catches Satan they would surely be rewarded by Bael, it would be so ironic that she FELL IN LOVE with Satan.
It also could be that we are just ruminating and then we'll both be very disappointed.😅
Before making this post I wanted to see if anyone else had the idea that Satan was Daon, or at least inhabitating Daon's body and @governments-babygirl had the same idea!! Ahh!!
What if the story itself is flawed? What if the show is showing us different storylines/narratives but from a twisted or unreliable narrator?
Daon being the only survivor from his entire family getting stabbed by serial killer J...what if Daon DID get stabbed, but Satan saw the plight the little boy was in at his young age and decided he would exact revenge on the whole world by possessing Daon?
The TWIST of Satan being in Daon, surrounded by good people, becoming a good person himself, becoming a cop, a profession where he would actively sought after criminals and nobody would ever suspect him to be a demon.
Daon's penchant for getting himself into trouble, his pull to becoming evil himself by trying to find and kill the guy that slaughtered his family? Him getting close to Justitia as soon as he clocked her bc he's sadistic, wants to keep an eye on her and what better way to hide from the enemy than being right by their side?
I confess, Bael should've known it was Satan the minute Daon got killed by Justitia, but maybe Satan possessed Daon sometime later? His wound not healing?
I DONT KNOW IM AT THE EDGE OF MY SEAT ABOUT THIS SHOW
It would be so so bittersweet that Justitia fell in love not just with what she thought was a human, but the demon she was chasing after all this time. What if Satan himself, influenced by Daon's actual feelings/humanity, developed feelings for Justitia? My brain is dead send help

I almost fell for you.
Tumblr media
I'm so excited about the upcoming episodes because episodes 5 and 6 are where Daon is finally starting to grasp the reality of what it means to be a Demon and what Kang Bitna aka Justitia is really capable of doing. It's one thing to know she's a demon, but to witness it firsthand has to be pretty life altering,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
especially for Daon who admitted almost falling for Justitia (despite being stabbed by her and being told multiple times that she was indeed a demon, wdym almost boy lol).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going back to my thoughts here on Justitia and Daon being id and superego respectively--it'd be really interesting to see Daon finding out what exactly is Justitia's mission and why is this so high-stakes for her. They might end up being allies eventually, begrudgingly, to punish the criminals, but I want to see how much of his morality is Daon ready to sacrifice for Justitia's survival and/or punishing the evil who trick the system.
Tumblr media
p.s. the shift in his eyes from the last 4 episodes and to 5-6 is so evident and kinda sorta sad.
Tumblr media
There was this spark before but in these two episodes it's like he doesn't really want to believe it's her doing all this, but he has enough evidence and he's bound by his sense of righteous justice. It's like the guy got this hope after many many years that there's this one person out there, she is crazy but also believes in getting to the truth, even if it comes from a child, but he is now having to crush that hope to ground because apparently this one person is incapable of feeling anything at all.
Tumblr media
When he says "Why can't you pick a different hobby? One that doesn't involve murder?" imo it was more out of desperation than anger. Because oh he hates hates hates the idea of her being so irredeemable that he'd have to hate her and fight her and bring her to justice.
That glint is gone, the veil has lifted, and he is clearly feeling a lot of things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SIGH. Idk where this is headed but I'm here for it.

Seen some viewers not liking The Judge from Hell for different reasons, and I think I kind of get why (just my guess). Also, disclaimer (in case it's not obvious enough): I respect and am fine with anyone disagreeing with me and not liking the show for whatever reason.
If you've watched The Devil Judge, then The Judge from Hell is not that. Unlike The Devil Judge, it doesn't have a dark, grim, ominous setup that stays true to that heavy vibe till the end. If you've watched Lucifer, it's not that either. Close but also not really. Unlike Lucifer, The Judge from Hell hasn't shown us an anti-hero/anti-heroine who, underneath the charisma and confidence and tricks and looks, is full of self-loathing, unprocessed angst and human-like emotions. I'm just going off of the 8 episodes of TJFH aired so far. Unlike Lucifer, Justitia doesn't seem to display a subconscious desire not to be misunderstood and abandoned, nor does she feel complex emotions about humans and humanity (it's just starting with Daon she still has a long way to go). We don't see a Fallen/Demon with a semblance of a moral compass here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even her "I trust what children say" doesn't mean much because she doesn't do that out of some morality; to her, it's just facts that children are the least crafty and least vile amongst humans. Justitia is very mechanical (and petty even) in what she does- she's not on some great self-discovery or redemption journey in here to even entertain the notion of humanity or morality. If we expect such nuance from her so early on in the story, we maybe setting ourselves up for disappointment. Y'all she's been doing this for Lord knows HOW many hundred years. It's not her first gig. If you have been having coffee at night despite being an insomniac for like three decades, it's highly likely you'd stop thinking or caring about the morality, the 'rightness' of drinking coffee even when it destroys your health.
Tumblr media
It's like that for her, to the point where she can, in fact, treat every murder, every crime, every criminal lightly. She's been the judge, jury and executioner all along, and that's the job she needs to do well on earth too. As audience, we may be living on earth longer than she's been but the moment Justitia stepped in, it became 'her world' that we're now getting a peek at.
Tumblr media
She's not some vigilante or messiah; just an eccentric, murdering demon from hell who likes Z cola and a pretty wardrobe and Han Daon too- what's wrong with that lol. I remember seeing similar sentiments when Vincenzo was on, because some felt the comedy and humor didn't go well with the overall theme, with a psycho CEO committing all kinds of crimes+ ML's childhood grief and mafia ptsd+ revenge etc. I feel like it was a conscious choice not to make the show so heavy or serious, despite the subject matter. TJFH feels like it treats heavy stuff casually because it is mostly shown through Justitia's lens, and so far, SHE has been treating heavy stuff casually. She really doesn't feel anything emotionally for the girl being in an abusive relationship, or the child being with that horrible excuse of a stepmom. All she sees are the sinners and their sins, and whether they can help her fulfill her mission.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But even that is changing now, gradually, with Justitia/Kang Bitna starting to feel more and more human emotions (props to Daon).
Tumblr media
Now, could we have gotten a more nuanced character arc with a serious undertone? Maybe yes, maybe no. The story is yet to unfold fully so I say it's too early to decide that? However, three things that come to mind are: 1. kdramas generally don't get seasons unlike TV series in the US or UK, to explore things gradually with each season geared towards a certain theme or development. Lucifer did what it did in six seasons. 2. I've noticed that unless it's a super horror, super apocalyptic or dystopian show, kdramas like to incorporate humor in their story no matter what genre it is (even shows like The Light in Your Eyes or Moon Lovers or Hi Bye, Mama have their lighthearted moments). Kdramas aren't perfect. Different shows become perfect to different audiences because of their personal preferences. I watch the show because the trailers promised us a fantasy drama with angst between the leads, because it gives me a good laugh, and also maybe because a small part in me kinda sorta lives vicariously through Justitia's ultimate reckoning lol.
Tumblr media
I'm actually glad it's not a heavy show because the stuff they've shown so far can be quite disturbing and triggering and I'd be very hesitant to proceed with it if that were the case. 3. I think it's also okay to acknowledge that not all writers/creatives would prefer to do the research needed to pull off certain themes, nuanced character arcs and dynamic, which can leave some viewers wanting more out of a character/show too.
It's fine not to like a hyped drama or a character (happens to me too). But in my opinion, the show is delivering what it promised to deliver initially, and I'm glad it is.
